We've got 3 events coming up the next 3 Saturdays we wanted to be sure you had the details for!

But before we get there, we wanted to take a moment to thank you for your advocacy at the City of San Diego and County of San Diego level and celebrate what we as a community achieved in fighting for a just budget! It wasn't easy, and we didn't get everything we wanted, but we did have some incredible wins, showed the strength of the people, and created greater bonds as a community that's committed to care and real public safety.

County of San Diego Wins, or almost - it’ll be finalized on June 25!

• Fully funded Immigrant Legal Defense Program (pays for free legal representation for immigrants, including unaccompanied minors, facing deportation orders; it’s universal and merits-blind)

• A feasibility study for Department of Youth Development - the first step in investing in supporting youth, not criminalizing them (shout out to Mid-City CAN for making this happen!)

• Increased staffing to help people keep their Medi-Cal and CalFresh benefits

What we’ll keep fighting against/for:

• Massive “Public Safety” / Sheriff and Detention Budget

  • Sheriff Martinez is continuing to mobilize support for a $1 billion investment in a brand new jail in Vista. We’ll mobilize in kind, alongside community partners like Saving Lives in Custody to stop it. Stay tuned for a call to action VERY soon as they’re already collecting comments on it.

  • Ending Girls Incarceration alongside Mid-City CAN.

• Greater investment in permanent housing solutions and eviction prevention

• Equitable access to Behavioral Health Services for children and youth

City of San Diego Wins - or rather, things that should never have been cut to begin with

• Office of Child and Youth Success has been reinstated (shout out to YouthWill_ and Children First Collective for leading the fight)

• Reinstated library and parks and rec hours and services in District 4, 8 & 9

• $10million reinstated of the original $13 million cut from Arts and Culture.

What we’ll keep fighting against/for:

• Massive “Public Safety” / SDPD Budget (now $718.6 MILLION!)

  • Fight to shut down Flock ALPR

  • Fight back against excessive police overtime, largely driven by excessive response sizes (we’re grateful to Councilmember Foster and Elo-Rivera who were hyper focused on this during the Budget Efficiency Committee meeting this week)

• Reinstated library hours and services - 37/7! We’re grateful for the advocacy efforts of the Library Foundation in what they fought back against AGAIN, but the work continues to restore 7 day a week access to all 37 libraries.

• Fighting for dignity: Access to public bathrooms and showers for our unhoused neighbors

We hope this finds you and your family well! Some of you are already off to summer, and others are beginning the end of school year craziness! And others, are navigating sleep regressions, teething, and so many other wonderful things! No matter your situation, we hope we can persuade you to spend 1 minute advocating for a County of San Diego budget that funds people’s needs. Keep reading to see how!

Local government can feel so elusive and the chaos and pain from the federal government can make us want to shut it all off. It can feel really disempowering at times. But! at some point, what we’re doing here together with San Diego Families for Justice struck a chord with you enough to join our community - because you want to live in a better world for you and your family. And one of the ways we make that better world is by focusing on local government - like at the County of San Diego level.

So, we’re de-mystifying it for you, and providing 3 very easy and quick ways to advocate for that better world. Read and scroll to get to the links!

No pressure, but you CAN do all 3 of these!

#1. Email the Community Budget Alliance advocacy letter!
It’ll go to all 5 County Supervisors (you can see who represents you here) and the Chief Administrative Officer who manages the whole budget & all things county. This letter covers a lot of great, very affordable asks to meet people’s basic needs for true public safety.

#2. Email the Children First Collective advocacy letter
It’ll go to all 5 County Supervisors (you can see who represents you here) to make the asks for a very specific list of projects in the works for children and youth.

#3. Submit an e-comment on the Budget website by 5pm on June 11.
To our knowledge, both the CAO and the County Supervisors will receive these comments as they come in. We’ve got 20,000 characters to work with, so sky is the limit on your asks! Here are some suggestions on what to write!

I live in the County of San Diego and I’m a busy parent. I’m concerned about the County Budget $3 billion allotment for “public safety”. Public safety for my family and so many I know looks like meeting people’s basic needs, including stable housing, access to healthy foods, quality parks and libraries, affordable and quality childcare and healthcare. Please fully fund efforts that keep families well & together, including the Immigrant Legal Defense Program, Eviction Prevention Program, a Department of Youth Development, robust Benefits staff for CalFresh & Medi-Cal and a Wage Theft team (OLSE).

We've got a busy week of activism this week, but I hope we've made it easy for you to spend 1 or 2 minutes fighting for community care and the world we want to live in!

Live in City of San Diego? Help us Shut Down Flock!

The TRUST Coalition is asking us to step it up while our Muslim neighbors are still grieving and about to honor Eid.

We *might* finally have the votes to SHUT DOWN FLOCK!

What is Flock? Annoying license plate reader cameras (500 throughout the city, but most heavily in black and brown communities) that use AI. Why is it a problem? SDPD broke the law and shared data with ICE, Flock is being sleazy about it and has reduced transparency as we've applied pressure, it's very ineffective and extremely costly ($2mill a year), cops in other states have stalked people using it.

Can you please submit a quick e-comment or plan to call in to City Council Wednesday @6:30pm?

Demand: Shut down Flock to fund community care like arts and culture, libraries, parks, and youth programming.

I am a parent and I live in San Diego. I am concerned about my kids and other kids’ wellbeing and safety. Surveillance like Flock which costs $2 million a year yet is ineffective 99.97% of the time, is not necessary to solve crimes. And doesn't make us feel safer. What does make us feel safer are well-resourced communities and third spaces. Things like youth programming and events, arts and cultural experiences, well kept parks and rec centers, libraries with accessible hours.

I demand you fund REAL safety - invest in community care, youth, and third spaces. Please affirm your commitment to prioritizing youth by urging the City Council to cancel FLOCK ALPR camera funding and instead invest $2 million into the Office of Child and Youth Success, Libraries, and Parks.

Our hearts are heavy with the violence toward our Muslim neighbors today at the Islamic Center in Clairemont - the lives taken & the childhoods robbed of innocence. Every life is precious.

Violence, racism & Islamophobia is never ok. Join us in honoring Amin’s bravery & supporting the Islamic Center community and all of our Muslim brothers and sisters.

Consider going for a neighborhood walk n’ chalk with your family and write encouraging messages of love and solidarity on the sidewalk or at a park near you or in neighborhoods with larger Muslim communities.

If you are able to, consider donating to support the Islamic Center community as they seek to support the 3 families who had loved ones stolen away, and all of the families and children who are traumatized by this violence.

We'll be pivoting our fundraising efforts at our May 30th event to raise funds for the Islamic Center community and to PANA.

And lastly, as you work on your June 2 Primary ballot, vote for candidates who are actively working toward liberation and safety for all people - including our Muslim brothers and sisters (our voter guide is dropping later this week to help you with this).

Bad Bunny is right - the only thing more powerful than hate is love. Let's love boldly so our Muslim brothers and sisters know we are with them and are committed to their safety and well-being.

We hope you're surviving the craziness of May and even thriving despite fascism!

Today is Children's Day or Día de los Niños! And we've got the perfect opportunity for you to honor your kiddos and all kiddos who live in San Diego County!

Children and youth programs and services are one of the first things to go during budget season. And we say, hell no!

Please spend 1 minute emailing the County Board of Supervisors (and City of San Diego City Council if you enter a San Diego zip code - tap the subject line to see the list) - and advocate to preserve and EXPAND children and youth services!

Next event: OMDC Vigil on Sunday!

We had a wonderful weekend gathered with friends new and old in Vista and in Chula Vista this weekend! It's always so good to gather together in nature!

Our next gathering will be at the vigil outside Otay Mesa Detention Center on Sunday, May 3. At least for now, this will be our last time going down there and setting up a kid space, so don't miss it!

This gathering will be a bit more somber, with moments of silence for those whose lives have been stolen and families who have been ripped apart by ICE. We'll have an opportunity to do coloring pages and letters of encouragement to detainees in OMDC. And we'll have chalk and bubbles and puzzles and building blocks for kiddos!

We'll add in some “fun” to raise funds for commissary through a succulent swap! Bring some clippings to share, take some home, and plant them while you're with us! (We're bringing dirt, pots, dozens of clippings, and pollinator plant seeds!).

Can't make it? Let's show how generous our SDF4J community is and Venmo $5-100 on Sunday to @otaymesacollective to fund phone calls, clean bottled water, tampons and pads, and edible food for detainees.

While the White House is fixated on foreign policy, there is still so much wreckage to recover from and active terror to oppose here in California and in San Diego. Let’s do our part to protect and resist - spend 5 minutes advocating on 1 or all 10 pieces of CALIFORNIA Legislation using Resistbot!

County action: Hold Sheriff accountable for ICE collaboration!

On Tuesday, the County Board of Supervisors is holding their TRUTH Act Community Forum. The TRUTH Act requires any law enforcement agency that provides ICE access to an individual must hold a community forum. The San Diego County Sheriff’s Department continues to allow ICE access to county facilities, notify ICE when individuals are being released, transfer individuals to ICE, and share information and resources with DHS agencies. The TRUTH Act Forum gives community members the opportunity to hold the Sheriff and County accountable for using County resources that aid in the detention and deportation of community members, and the separation of families in our region.

Submit E-Comment here (Agenda item #17) by Monday evening letting the Board of Supervisors and the Sheriff we ARE NOT OK with this and we want ICE OUT!

A couple e-comment examples to consider:

The San Diego County Sheriff must stop being complicit in the deportation of our community members. We demand the Sheriff stop allowing ICE access to county facilities, end all transfers and notifications to ICE, and stop sharing and receiving resources from DHS agencies.

The San DIego Sheriff has broken community trust and makes our communities less safe. While ICE terrorizes our communities and violates our rights, the Sheriff continues notifications and transfers leading to further inhumane treatment and family separations.

ICE is tearing apart families, creating chaos and making us all unsafe. No county funds should go to have anything to do with their unjust and unconstitutional actions. Stop all entanglement with ICE in San Diego and get ICE out now.

We just wrapped up our 4 clothing/toy/book swaps this month! It was so good to see many of you - and do a whole lotta good together, too! We kept stuff out of landfills by reusing, saved money and stopped supporting corporate greed by reusing, too! We brought our kiddos some joy with some new-to-you clothes, books, and toys. AND, we also raised a bunch of money for HRCOside, SheFest, Otay Mesa Collective, and Lambda Rising Soccer. So many good things!

Hitting a slump in your activism?

I’m not sure how you and your family has been feeling, but with the War on Iran and all the chaos of school and stress of life, I hit a bit of a slump this month. Sometimes it all feels like too much, progress is so slow, and it can seem like things are just getting worse. Spending some extra intentional time with my family has rejuvenated me a bit and reminded me WHY I want to fight for a just world - because my kids sure don’t need to grow up in this mess. I’ve been pondering this quote and it’s given me some direction - perhaps it might for you, too?

“You have to act as if it were possible to radically transform the world. And you have to do it all the time.” - Angela Davis

Let’s do some quick, easy activism:

It’s through local efforts that it can be MUCH easier to see the transformation (and our collective power) when we push those in positions of power to make change (or change who is in power). When we raise our voices - and we bring our friends along with us, it can make a BIG splash. So, be sure to share this with a friend so they can take action too.

City of San Diego (7 min)

#1. City Council is voting on Tuesday to adopt the IHRA definition of antisemitism that conflates Antisemitism with anti-Zionism and has been used to label criticism of Israel as antisemitic, raising serious concerns about free speech and civil liberties, not to mention, do very little to make our Jewish neighbors safer.

Email City Councilmembers here. and/or Submit public comment here (3/17/26, Agenda # 500, Oppose, comment suggestions here (pg 4) compiled by CAIR.

Call in virtually on Zoom or go in-person at 2pm to give public comment!

#2. San Diego has its own George Floyd - this time, a 16 year old named Konoa Wilson, who was fleeing gunfire. San Diego taxpayers paid $30,000,000 for his murder, and the cop that killed him (without any hesitation) is still working and has no charges. Email Mayor Gloria here to change that.

#3. Take this 5 Min Survey on Budget Priorities. We’re going into another unpleasant and ugly budget cycle - with a $120mill deficit. (Of course, SDPD’s $700mill budget likely won’t get touched unless we fight, but parks and libraries and even more revenue-generating avenues probably will). Let Mayor Gloria know what you want funded here.

#4. Extra time? Find out which district you live in. District 2 (PB, Mission Bay, OB), 4 (SE San Diego), 6 (Mira Mesa area), and 8 (South Bay/San Ysidro) are all up for re-election. County of San Diego (2 min)

#1. Fight for childcare! We’re part of the Children First Collective, working toward affordable childcare, behavioral health supports, and living wages for caregivers here in San Diego County! Send this quick letter to the Board of Supervisors.

#2. Email the Chamber of Commerce. GeoGroup (for-profit prison group) runs the detention facility in City of SD and is in the chamber of commerce, preventing them from taking a powerful stance against ICE. Email to get GeoGroup out

State of California (4 min)

#1. Advocate to Close Prisons! Spend 1 minute to email a bunch of CA legislators and Newsom to close more prisons. Otherwise, we’ll be paying $18,800,000,000 for prisons next year; crime is down and prisons do NOT rehabilitate people. What a waste and cruel use of our tax dollars!

#2. Oppose the death penalty in CA! Spend 1 minute to demand Gov. Newsom grant clemency to the 574 people on Death Row. He put a moratorium on the death penalty in place (but it’s technically still legal here), but hasn’t granted clemency yet. The death penalty is evil, racist, and unjust, and far too many people of color with wrongful convictions have been killed by the state.

#3. Advocate for Healthcare! We are part of the fight for universal healthcare here in California (called CalCare), spend 1 minute calling or emailing your CA assemblymember to co-sponsor the bill (AB1900). For email option, use Resistbot by texting SIGN PKKXSV to 50409. (You can learn more at San Diego for CalCare).

#4. Advocate for HUGS! Did you know youth in juvenile detention centers aren’t allowed to get or give hugs from their visitors? No hand holding with their mamas, no squeezing their own little one, no hug while they’re upset! As a mother, this makes me furious! HOW is this humane and healing?! Let’s fix this and help pass the HUGS Act (AB 1645). Email your CA assemblymember and senator and Newsom using Resistbot: text Sign PONWCO to 50409.

Federal (1 min)

If you’ve stopped calling and emailing, I feel you - I have scaled back a lot, too, and have skipped some days as well. If you want to stay in the ring just a little bit (because it can matter greatly), spend 1 minute today setting up your Resistbot account, then text or send via messenger “FOLLOW COLEMAN”. This person has been faithfully creating solid letters every day of this awful presidency based on the most pressing issue of the day. You’ll get 1 text each day once they post the letter; you respond “Yes”, then “Email”, and voila! Your email to Senator Schumer, Senator Padilla and your Rep are sent! If you want to test it out, I just made a letter for the war on Iran. Text SIGN PWJQDD to 50409 to get started with Resistbot and send my letter to end the War on Iran. For some, they could challenge how this is helpful; but I say, we’re still paying attention, and giving the little scraps of time and energy we still have amidst parenting, work, marriage/partners, and bills. That’s huge.

We so enjoy being in community with you - we had lovely gatherings on Saturday and Sunday, and are looking forward to this upcoming weekend with more of you! The love and care and connectedness we have when we “find our people” can be so empowering and make us brave for when it really counts.

Some of our families and kiddos did all of that at Otay Mesa Detention Center on Sunday, singing songs as a community for the hostages inside to be encouraged (and us, too!). “This little light of mine” really moved us to tears!

March Save the Dates!

We are feeling CRAZY ambitious and are going to put on 5 clothing/toy/book swaps in March just in time for Eid al-Fitr, Easter, and a season change! Remaining items will be donated to Gently Hugged, which provides clothes to new moms in the hospital with a year’s worth of clothes for their little one and to SheFest who distributes in City Heights at Pop Up Winona, and Mutual Aid for Moms, and Sharia’s Closet. PANA and the Black Infant Health Program will be invited as well as anyone in the public to join our swaps! Leftover books will be dispersed across little free libraries throughout the county during the month.
